Lavik Images #161 - #200

This page is part of the sequential posting of the 319 Lavik Photograph Images, and contains Images #161 - #200. The first pages in the Lavik section provide the context for these photos - by describing the background on this collection, the Lavik ancestry in Norway, the biography of Rev. Rasmus Lavik and his family, a listing of all the extended family members and the locations where they lived, and an index to the 319 images. The image at right is #164, of an unidentified young woman dressed in clothes of the period and taken at a studio in Minneapolis, is posted below with an explanation.

The Lavik Photograph Items

Items #161-#200

161 - Older Man WIth White Beard and middle-aged couple, Dorge, Minneapolis - edited.jpg

Item #161. Older Man with long white beard, middle-aged couple, Dorge (Studio) at 1819 Riverside Ave. in Minneapolis.  Elias G. E. Dorge worked out of this address from 1891 to 1914, according to the Minnesota directory.  It is unclear who these people are and how they fit to the Lavik family.

Item #162 - Unknown Man, photo taken at S. A. Eggan, 251 Riverside Avenue, Minneapolis.  S. A. Eggan is obviously a relative of the person who took the photo that is Item #160 – listed as S. P. Eggan, the directory is less specific about S. A., just saying he worked out of this address in the 1900’s.  There is a Stephen Eggan who also worked out of this address, and may also be the person listed as S. A Eggan.  Severt P. Eggan, is listed in the 1910 Minneapolis census, age 39, a photographer owning his own shop, and is shown in 1920 with the same occupation.  He is shown in the Find-A-Grave listing as buried in Hillsdale Cemetery in Minneapolis, having died in 1929.  I have not found a Stephen Eggan in these censuses.

162 - Unknown Man, S. P. Eggan, Minneapolis.jpg
163 - Young Man, Kroglund Studio, Minneapolis.jpg

Item #163 - Unidentified Young Man, Kroglund Studio, Minneapolis.  The Minnesota directory lists a Frederick Kroglund of Kroglund and Company, working in Minnesota in the 1890’s – nothing else listed.  There is a young – 28 years old – Frederick Kroglund listed in the 1900 census in Minot North Dakota with his occupation listed as “artist”.  I have not found another relevant listing for a Frederick Kroglund

Item #164 - Unidentified Young Woman, Lee Bros. “Platino Portrait”, Minneapolis, posted as the heading for this page.  There is a listing in the Minnesota early photographer directory for C. F. Lee, who worked as “Lee Brothers”, roughly from 1906 to 1907 in Minneapolis.  Peder Lee, Thorwald Lee, and Thorwald’s widow Martha also worked in Lee Brothers for a longer window – the 1890’s to the 1940’s, so this photograph could  have been any time in that period.  Given the dress, and style – it is likely from the first decade or two of that period.  There is one other photo from Lee Bros. – #316 , an unidentified man – with a different studio marking.

164 - Young Woman, Lee Bros., Minneapolis.jpg
165 - Unknown Lake (?) - Dorge, Minneapolis.jpg

Item #165 - Photo of an Unknown Lake or Reservoir.  Clearly a “Man-Made” Body of Water in the country somewhere.  Also taken (developed) at Dorge studios of Minneapolis.  This was one of four photographs with this studio marking – the others were #161; #245; and #246.  No two of the four studio markings have the same marking design.

Item #166 - Ingvald Lavik, Miller Studios, Minneapolis.  William R. Miller did business as Miller Studios in a few cities.  The Minneapolis periods were 1884 to 1917.  Yet the previous biographical reference dates this photo a few years after that period.  This is a match to photo #45 as well. There is no studio marking on this photo, but I have deduced information from the identical photo that comes with studio markings.

Item #45 was in a frame that listed Miller Studios in Minneapolis.  There were two Millers in Minneapolis in this period, but only one seems to have had the name of Miller Studios.  It was William R. Miller, located in Minneapolis from about 1884 to about 1917.  Yet this photo matches the photo that is shown in the 1927 pastor book.  In the directory, that photo is dated 1921.  Ingvald was in Luther Seminary in Minneapolis on both sides of his World War I service (Luther Seminary, 1917-18, 1919-21), and this picture was likely taken in that era.  So this photo was likely taken in 1921 in whatever Miller studio was open at that time.

The entry from the 1927 pastor’s directory - which proves the match to the photo at right - is shown below.

Ingvald Lavik - 1927 Pastor Bk - Bio & Photo.jpg
166 - Ing Lavik - Miller Studios, Minneapolis.jpg
167 - Unidentified Woman - Liebig Minneapolis.jpg

Item #167 - Unidentified Older Woman, Minneapolis Liebig Studio.  A. O. Liebig worked out of Minneapolis in the 1914-1926 period.

Item #168 - Unidentified Young Girl, no name, date, or studio location listed - shown below left.  The backside lists a New York company, and how photos could be reordered - and is shown below right.  This could be a school photo, or given the backside ordering information, could be a reprint from another cabinet card photograph.

168a - Unknown School Girl - New York Company - Backside.jpeg

Item #169 - Two Unidentified Young Men, postcard format, with the marking of the Chamberlin Studio in Northfield, Minnesota.  Louis C. Chamberlin operated out of Northfield in the period that included 1911 and 1930 – it is unclear from the directory whether he photographed in the years in between.  In that time period, Ingvald Lavik was at St. Olaf Academy in Northfield in 1910-1911, and Nils Ofstedahl’s son Theodore was in this general vicinity in this period – but neither of these is Ingvald Lavik. Many other Lavik family members were in Northfield, but all but Ingvald were prior to 1911. It is possible that the man on the left is Theodore Lavik, but he was not known to have studied in Northfield.

169 - Two Young Men, Postcard by Chamberlin, Northfield, MN.jpg
170 - Unknown young man - Lawin, Northfield-Waseca MN.jpg

Item #170 - Unknown Young Man, Lawin listed as the photographer in the cities of Northfield and Waseca, Minnesota.  Item #94 lists the same photographer, in a similar coloring format, yet that photo states A. J. Lawin and lists Northfield only (the directory states that while he was working in Northfield, his working address was 21 Mill Square).  This photo just states “Lawin” and lists both cities.  The directory indicates that Lawin worked in Northfield from 1888 to 1896; in New Richland Minnesota in 1898-99; and in Waseca from 1900 to 1904.  Waseca looks like it’s about thirty miles southwest of Northfield, and New Richland is just south of Waseca.  There is an Albert Julius Lawin buried in Waseca, showing that he died in 1904.  The Brainerd Daily Dispatch of May 16, 1904 reports that a leading businessman of Waseca, A. J. Lawin, drowned.  I suspect the person in this photo is of Northfield, which would make the time frame most likely 1888 to 1896.  In that period, the following family members were in the Northfield area: Durin 1887-1889 Rasmus Lavik was a Student, St. Olaf College; In the period 1892 – 1896, Andrew Lavik Attended St. Olaf College; and during the period 1895-99, Carl Grimsrud attended St. Olaf College;

Item #171 - Young Woman, possibly Marie Lavik, studio marking of Sumner and Son, Northfield.  The Minnesota Directory lists two photographers in the Sumner and Son listing – Ira E., who died in 1918 and his son, Charles Stuart, who died in 1954.  It is unclear from the directory when they worked together as Sumner and Son, but it appears to be in the 1900-1920 period.  Marie Lavik was here in the late 1890’s, and died in November 1902. This photo looks familiar to Marie as shown in one of the Lavik children photo. This woman and the woman in the next photo appear to be the two women shown in the photo which is Item #263.

171 - Young Woman, Sumner & Son, Northfield, MN.jpg
172 - Another Young Woman, Sumner and Son, Northfield, MN.jpg

Item #172 - Unidentified Young Woman, Sumner and Son, Northfield, same photographer and exact same frame as the previous photo – probably taken at the same time.  Not known who this person was.

Item #173 - Unidentified bearded man, taken at Zimmerman (photographer), St. Paul, Minnesota.  Charles A. Zimmerman, is shown as operating one of the larger studios in that region.  There is a listing of other Zimmermans – who appear to be his brothers  – who worked with him in this studio.  The studio appears to have operated through 1908, and even later with another of the brothers.  This photo appears to be of a style that was before 1900.

173 - Unknown Bearded Man, Zimmerman, St. Paul, MN.jpg
174 - Unknown Young Man, Haynes, St. Paul, MN.jpg

Item #174 - Unidentified Young Man, Haynes photo studio, St. Paul, Minnesota.  The Haynes brothers appear to have been in operation in St. Paul from 1889 to 1908.  Andrew Lavik was at the Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul during this period – as were friends of the Lavik family.

175 - Unknown man w muttonchops - Palmquist & Jurgens, St. Paul, MN.jpg

Item #175 - Unidentified Young Man with Muttonchops, Palmquist and Jurgens, St. Paul.  The Minnesota photographer directory indicates a timeframe for this firm from 1883 to 1900 in St. Paul.  Alfred Palmquist operated for a longer time in in St. Paul, and Jurgens is shown as being in this firm from 1886 to 1890, which probably places this photo about this time.  The Luther Theological Seminary was not in St. Paul until 1899, so these two times do not seem to overlap.  The marking on the back of the photo, shown above right, lists an address.  I also scanned a very high resolution copy of the lapel pin, shown below right.  The only thing recognizable is the letter “b”, maybe the insignia is recognizable to others.

175a - Unknown man w muttonchops - Palmquist & Jurgens, St. Paul, MN - Backside.jpeg
175b - Unknown man w muttonchops - Palmquist & Jurgens, St. Paul, MN - Lapel Pin.jpeg
176 - Second Unidentified Married Couple, M. Brown, Wahpeton, ND.jpg

Item #176 - Unidentified married couple, Wahpeton, North Dakota – M. Brown Studio.  The other pictures from this studio were #54 and #131, the latter being another married couple in their wedding clothes. As mentioned with the prior photos, Murray Brown is shown as a photographer in Wahpeton from 1894 to 1910.  The studio marking with this photo is similar to the one with Item #131, which was also a photograph of a newly married couple.

Item #177 - Unidentified Baby, Erickson (photographer/studio), Rugby, North Dakota.  Christian Erickson was shown as a photographer in Rugby in the 1906-07 period, possibly photographing at other times but in the directory for this period. This appears to be the only photo in the batch related to Rugby, North Dakota.  In the Bygdebok for Modalen Herald – which includes Lavik – there are a number of “bruks” or farms, listed, showing the families who have lived at each through the years.  Bruk One contains the family of Rasmus Lavik and his siblings and parents.  Bruk Two contains the family of Johannes Jonson Lavik and Magdeli Eilevsdatter Namdal – two children of whom were Anders Lavik and Johannes Lavik, born in 1860 and 1862.  They both appear to have come to America and a descendant of Johannes was Richard Lavik, of Rugby, North Dakota – who has done Lavik research.  This means there was a Lavik branch – even if they lived on a different farm at Lavik  – in Rugby.

177 - Unidentified Baby, Rugby ND - Erickson Photographer.jpg
178 - Four children, A. E. Johnson, Oakes, ND.jpg

Item #178 - Four Lavik brothers, dressed up, photographed by A. E. Johnson in Oakes, North Dakota.  Oakes North Dakota is southwest of Milnor, across the Sargent County line into Dickey County.  A. E. Johnson is listed in the early Dakota photographer directory as having taken photos in Oakes during the 1900-1910 period.  I am not sure why Oakes is the place chosen to have this photo taken, as it’s a ways from Milnor, but at least one issue of the Oakes Times (September 18, 1913)has a front page article on “Scandinavian Lutherans will be in Oaks October 11th and 12th, and that the opening sermon at 11 a.m. on October 11th will be given by Rev. R. Lavik of Milnor  That is a number of years after this photo was taken, but shows a connection to Oakes.  This is likely a photograph of the four Lavik brothers by Antonette, the Four Lavik brothers having been born in 1891, 1892, 1895, and 1897.  The photo was probably taken about 1900.  I suspect that Ingvald is to the left, Rudy in back, Anton on the right, and Theodore in front.  Item #79 is a photo of the four brothers approximately five years after this photograph was taken.

Item #179 - Unidentified Young Man, also taken at A. E. Johnson in Oakes – the same markings and information as in the previous photo.  This might be someone obvious I am just not getting. The previous photo has the four Lavik sons of Rasmus by Antonette. The youngest Lavik son by Ingeborg, was John R. Lavik, who would have been nineteen at the time the previous photo was taken. This photo does not appear to be him.

179 - Young Man, A. E. Johnson, Oakes, ND.jpg
180 - Unknown Baby, Oakes Art Studio, Oakes, ND.jpg

180a - Oakes Art Studio Advertisement from Oakes Times Issue of June 16, 1910.jpeg

Item #180 - Unidentified Baby, Oakes Art Studio, Oakes, North Dakota.  The Dakota Directory does not list a name to go with this studio, but lists 1910 as the year the studio was in operation.  That would be thirteen years after the last Lavik child was born to Rasmus and Antonette, but Dora began having children in 1907, and John Lavik in 1908.  The Chronicling America website has editions of the Oakes Times newspaper.  In the edition of June 10, 1910 is the advertisement above which would be about the time this photo was taken, and gives a context for the photo.

Item #181 - This photo of an unidentified young man, is very small in reality, but has been enlarged to bring out the image on this page.  The photo was taken at Hansen and Reis in Fargo, North Dakota.  This photographer was shown in the Dakota photographer directory as in business in the 1900-01 period – and was also in business in Towner, North Dakota, which is roughly two hundred and fifty miles away from Fargo.  As shown above, the address of the studio at 205 N. P. Avenue in Fargo, is listed. In the 1900 census in Fargo, there is a Carl Reis, 26, with his wife and two children, listed as a photographer.  He was shown as born in Norway.

There are not any Laviks that appeared to live in Fargo, North Dakota – but Moorhead, Minnesota is right across the river.  Andreas Oefstedal was in Moorhead for five years in the 1890’s as a minister, Andrew Lavik was a teacher there in the 1896-97 period, and in the teens Ingvald, Rudy, and Theodore were all students in the area.

181 - Unknown Young Man, Hansen & Reis, Fargo ND.jpg
182 - Unknown Young Man - Haynes - Fargo, Dakota Territory.jpg

Item #182 - Unidentified young man, Haynes (photographer) in Fargo, Dakota Territory.  There were two Haynes, Frank and Fred, who took photos in Fargo during the time of Dakota Territory and for a few years after North Dakota was admitted to the Union in 1889 – Frank Jay Haynes from 1876 to 1893; and Fred E. Haynes from 1880 through 1891. The North Dakota State University Archives show that F. Jay Haynes from 1879 to 1889 at 725 Front Street.  It is likely that this photograph was in the 1880-1889 decade during the time of that studio location, as D. T. for Dakota Territory is listed on the photograph marking.  This seems to be before many of the family members were in the area across the river from Fargo in Moorhead – those family members referred to in the discussion of the previous item.

Item #183 - Unidentified Woman, Scherling and Wagner Studio at 113 Broadway in Fargo, North Dakota.  Neither of these photographers is in the Dakota directory, indicating that this photo was taken after 1920.  An online listing for “Scherling Photography”, in business to this day, gives the history of that business.  It is stated that Arvid R. Sterling began a business there in 1920, and in the period 1924-1925 operated with his brother-in-law William Wagner and Scherling & Wagner.  In the early years of the business, the studio was located at the Broadway site.  The history also states they were operating for a period in Moorhead.  This history would imply that this photo – and the next one – were taken in that 1924-1925 period.  But that doesn’t seem to match the family history in the area.  It seems that  from a family perspective, this is someone from the Grimsrud family who lived in the Moorhead area.  It seems obvious who this might be – a Grimsrud daughter and her spouse or her brother.  That would make this photo more likely taken in the 1930’s.  It is possible that these photos will be identified by a family member, or match to others in the batch before we’re done.

183 - Unidentified Woman, Scherling & Wagner, Fargo, ND.jpg
184 - Unidentified Male Graduate, Scherling & Wagner, Fargo, ND.jpg

Item #184 - The description of the previous photo describes what we might know or guess about this photo.  If this is Joseph Langemo, who married B. Marie Grimsrud in 1934, is it possible that these two photos are of both of them.  The one photo I have of him is from the 1952 pastor book – twenty years roughly after this photo was taken.  I cannot tell if this is the same person.

Item #185 - Unidentified Baby, F. W. Gertson, Lidgerwood, North Dakota.  Previous photos #47, #48, #49, #66, #123, #132 were taken in this studio, this one, and photos #186 through #191, #260,and #269.  His studio was operating from 1900 to 1921.  It will be difficult to ever identify the infants in some of these photos.  Almost all of the next six photos are probably in that category.

185 - Unidentified Baby, F. W. Gertson, Lidgerwood, ND.jpg
186 - Unidentified Child, F. W. Gertson, Lidgerwood, ND.jpg

Item #186 - Another Photograph of An Unidentified Child, also taken in the studio of F. W. Gertson, Lidgerwood, North Dakota.

Item #187 - Another Photograph of An Unidentified Baby, also taken in the studio of F. W. Gertson, Lidgerwood, North Dakota.

187 - Another Unidentified Baby, F. W. Gerston, Lidgerwood, ND.jpg
188 - Unidentified Young Man - F. W. Gertson, Lidgerwood, ND.jpg

Item #188 - Another Photograph of An Unidentified Young Man, also taken in the studio of F. W. Gertson, Lidgerwood, North Dakota.

Item #189 - Another Photograph of An Unidentified Young Child, also taken in the studio of F. W. Gertson, Lidgerwood, North Dakota.

189 - Unidentified Young Boy - F. W. Gertson - Lidgerwood, ND.jpg
190 - Unidentified Woman and Child, F. W. Gertson, Lidgerwood, ND.jpg

Item #190 - Another Photograph of An Unidentified Woman and Young Child, also taken in the studio of F. W. Gertson, Lidgerwood, North Dakota.

191 - Another unidentified Baby - F. W. Gertson, Lidgerwood, ND.jpg

191a - Another unidentified Baby - F. W. Gertson - Scan of Gertson Studio Marking.jpeg

Item #191 - Another Photograph of An Unidentified Baby, also taken in the F. W. Gertson, Lidgerwood, North Dakota, chipped away from the original full card stock on the bottom right.  The studio marking is in the frame at the bottom and almost impossible to read by the naked eye as it is imprinted.  I scanned it at a high resolution and you can make out the studio marking.

Item #192 - Unidentified Young Man, Flaten (Studio), Moorhead, Minnesota.  There are many other photos from Flaten, who is described with photos #5 and #34, and whose photo is shown on the page introducing the Lavik Photo Collection.  As mentioned before, the Flaten photo studio was of O. E. Flaten in Moorhead, Minnesota.  There is a listing in the Minnesota early photographer directory for Ole E. Flaten, of Vanders Norway, who was in Moorhead, Minnesota in various locations from 1884 to 1928.  Such a big window makes it hard to identify just who was in the photo.  With Concordia here, and many family members having attended, there are many possibilities, as well as the fact that  Rev. Carl Grimsrud and Rev. Andreas Oefstedal were ministers in the Moorhead area. Also, Theodore Lavik was a student here at the time of his death in January 1920 - and it is a possibility this is a photo of him.

192 - Unknown Young Man (Theodore Lavik?), Moorhead, MN.jpg
193 - Unidentified Baby, Oyloe Studio, Moorhead MN.jpg

Item #193 - Unidentified Baby, Oyloe Studio, Moorhead, Minnesota.  This studio is described with photo #33, and appears to be a studio where family members had their portraits taken in the 1920’s and 1930’s.  There are six photos from this studio in the Lavik collection of photos.  Of those in that six that have been identified, they have all been from the Dora Lavik Grimsrud family. That suggests that this might be a photo of someone from that family.

Item #194 - Unidentified Woman, possible Rasmus daughter, Flaten Studio, Corner of Fourth and Front Sts. In Moorhead, Minnesota.  This looks like it would be of the earlier period that Ole Flaten photographed.  This does look like one of the Rasmus Lavik daughters.

194 - Unknown Woman, Flaten Studio, Moorhead, MN.jpg
195 - Agnes and B. Marie Grimsrud - Oyloe Studio, Moorhead MN.jpg

Item #195 - These are Grimsrud sisters, taken at the Oyloe Studio in Moorhead, with Agnes on the left, and B. Marie Grimsrud on the right.  There are two subsequent scans, 195a and 195b, that showed these photos individually.  Joe Langemo identified these photographs.  As stated two items ago, there were six photographs from the Oyloe Studio – and of those identified, they were from the Grimsrud family.

196 - Unidentified Young Man, Woman, no date, no location.jpg

Item #196 - Unidentified couple, no date, studio, or location listed.

Item #197 - Unidentified Baby, no date, studio, or location.

197 - Unidentified Baby, No Date, No Location.jpg
198 - Young Men, Group Photo, No Date or Location.jpg

Item #198 - Group of unidentified young men, no date or location.  The two older men with mustaches look familiar from some other photographs, but it just could be how men looked in the period.  There is no obvious Lavik in this photo. It could be St. Olaf, it could be Concordia, or it could be Luther Seminary.

199 - Young People, in costume, no date or location.jpg

Item #199 - Unidentified Young people in costume, no date or location.  Looks like they are dressed up for a theatrical performance.  None of the individuals looks easily recognizable as a Lavik family member.

200 - Young Couple (Lavik?), Winter Clothes, no date or location.jpg

Item #200 - Unidentified Young couple outdoors in winter, no date or location.  Another couple in the background.  There’s a later photograph - as Item #217 – that is a different pair of people in a similar location of sitting on the railing with the trees and a building in the background.  Between the two photos, the man up front with the first couple seems to be one of the two men in the second photo.  It appears to be an institutional setting, like a university.  I scanned a high resolution of the white item that appeared to be on the man’s lapel, but upon a closer look it’s actually part of the building behind and not part of the lapel at all.
